Stage 1: Boario - Annunciata - Borno

From the thermal baths of Boario to the Plateau of the Sun

From the historic thermal center of Boario, the first stage offers a unique journey that combines nature, history and spirituality. Starting from the heart of the thermal center, you follow a stretch that runs alongside the Oglio river, immersing yourself in a suggestive and regenerating environment. Subsequently, the route begins to climb, scaling the mountain slopes until reaching the convent of the Annunciata, a place of peace and reflection. From here, you continue through lush woods and nature trails that lead to the characteristic village of Borno, with its traditions and charm. Along the way, it is possible to admire archaeological sites of great interest, such as the megalithic sanctuaries dating back to the Copper Age located at Corni Freschi and Valzel de Undine, witnesses of ancient civilizations that inhabited these lands, making the entire experience an unforgettable adventure.

WHAT TO SEE

Here is a list of archaeological areas and sites of interest that you will have the opportunity to visit on Via Raetia:

The archaeological area of Luine
In a dominant position over the town of Darfo Boario Terme, the area has yielded - in addition to numerous rock engravings - remains of probable places of worship, hut foundations and dry stone wall structures, which could testify to the presence of a "sanctuary" used by one or more prehistoric communities to carry out collective ceremonies.
At Luine you can see the oldest rock engravings of the Camunian cycle, dating back to the Mesolithic period, perhaps executed by semi-nomadic hunters who used the valley as a hunting territory at the end of the great glaciations. Subsequently the area was abandoned to become again a place of worship and engraving towards the end of the Neolithic and especially in the Bronze and Iron Ages.

The archaeological site of Corni Freschi
The area of the Corni Freschi boulder, on the right bank of the Oglio at the base of the Monticolo hill, is part of the complex of places of worship that during the Copper Age (III millennium BC) characterize various locations in Valle Camonica. In the center of the vertical wall a composition of nine halberds has been carved, from which derives the other name by which it is indicated: "Rock of the halberds".

Archaeological Path of the Annunciata
The path, rich with more than 60 engraved rocky areas, is located along the southern slope of the Sanctuary of the Annunciata. The engraving technique is graffito. The engravings reproduce weapons, human figures, and inscriptions in pre-Roman alphabet.

Valzel de l'Undine
Valzel de Undine is one of the numerous megalithic sanctuaries that dot the entire valley. Four engraved boulders attributable to the Copper Age have been musealized in situ.

DON'T MISS

Our suggestions on what not to miss along the route:

The Annunciata
The sanctuary of the Santissima Annunciata stands in a panoramic position and preserves inside precious frescoes by Giovanni Pietro da Cemmo including the triumphal arch of 1479 with thirty-three panels that narrate the life of Christ. Of interest are the cloisters, including the main one with fountain from 1747.
