The Origins of Via Raetia

Raetia was created in 2011 by Carlo Zani, driven by the desire to ideally retrace the journey that prehistoric man made when ascending the Valle Camonica more than thirteen thousand years ago, through a territory rich in megalithic sanctuaries and thousands of rock engravings recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Suspended in 2020, the Via Raetia was relaunched in 2022 thanks to the collaboration between Carlo Zani, Marco Rovati and Laura Bonetti. The project was rethought and expanded: the original route was redesigned to transform what had been a hiking trail into a true long-distance trail, with a clear identity and a precise guiding thread. The focus shifted to the rock art and archaeology of the Valle Camonica, leading the trail through 13 archaeological sites — a record unmatched among Italian trails.

Today the Via Raetia is the result of the work and passion of all three: Carlo Zani for historical research, Marco Rovati for route design, environmental expertise and territorial enhancement, Laura Bonetti for communication, graphic design and the storytelling of the journey. Three different perspectives, one shared goal: to give the Valle Camonica a trail worthy of its extraordinary heritage.
